How to Check Insurance Benefits for Nutrition Counseling

If we decide to work together, I’ll run an insurance benefits estimate for you. This gives us an idea of what your coverage may look like. Please note that this is only an estimate, and final coverage decisions are made by your insurance provider.

Another option for checking benefits is to call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask to speak to a representative. The representative will let you know about your policy coverage.

What to ask when you check benefits

Here are the questions to ask the insurance representative:

  • Do I have nutrition counseling or medical nutrition therapy benefits (CPT codes 97802, 97803, 97804)?

  • Is this benefit limited to a specific diagnosis?

  • Is a physician referral needed?

  • Is a prior authorization needed?

  • Is there a limit to the number of visits?

  • What will my copay or coinsurance amount be?

  • Is there anything else I should know about seeking nutrition counseling?

What if you are not covered?

If you find out that your insurance plan doesn't cover nutrition counseling, I offer self-pay packages for out-of-network or uninsured clients. To learn more, feel free to book a free discovery call—I'd be happy to walk you through the options!
